No advancement opportunities â€" the company isn’t promoting from within, the people above you are not going anywhere in their career and have no desire to move, so there’s nowhere for you to go. The company is not growing so new opportunities aren’t being created. You’ve contributed all that you can or made the biggest impact that you can, and in order to continue making a difference you have to leave the current company. You’ve expressed an interest in moving up (maybe even multiple times) but your boss is holding you back for whatever reason. The work environment is negative and it’s creating undue stress. The culture is stifling and your ideas and thoughts aren’t taken seriously. You’re unhappy, you feel like your career is stagnant, and you realize that you could be doing more, earning more, feeling more fulfilled and more challenged if you were employed somewhere else. Even if we feel like we should make a career move, we don’t always take the next step to do it. My first job out of college I had a terrible boss. Talk about getting a real-world education! It didn’t take me long to figure out that I wasn’t going to be happy working for an overly negative boss, but it was many more months before I finally got up the courage to move on. I kept hanging on, waiting for a promotion or for the situation to change. Neither happened; I eventually had my fill and moved on. I recently asked my LinkedIn connections why they stayed in a job they hated: What holds us back from making our next career move? Providing for my family’s basic needs Kids are in a good school and don’t want to move Hard time finding a new opportunity Staying for a promised promotion Waiting to hit the 10-year mark to get retirement For money and the pension Job stability â€" to not appear like a job hopper Mortgage, college tuition â€" LIFE I also want to address some of the things that we don’t always like to talk about that cause us to stay in jobs with little-to-no growth and advancement opportunities? Fear of the unknown. I hear a lot of people lament over the “what ifs.” What if I hate the new job? What if it’s worse than my current one? What if the boss is worse? What if I have to move? What if I can’t find anything suitable or that will pay me my current salary? We let fear, doubt, and worry keep us from trying new things, looking around to see what’s out there, or venturing out into a new opportunity that may actually prove to be so much better than we ever thought! Let me encourage you not to let fear hold you back. Instead of focusing on the negative what ifs, let’s focus on the positive ones. I’m really good at this, being the eternal optimist I am. What if your new boss is amazing, invested in your growth, and not only appreciates your ideas but implements them? What if your new employer values your input, decisions, and accomplishments? What if the new employer pays you 30-50% more than your current annual salary to do the work you love? What if your career satisfaction increases and you feel more fulfilled when you go to work? What if the decision to leave your current company and accept a new role changes the entire trajectory of your career, causing you to earn more, advance rapidly, contribute at a higher level, and make a bigger impact? Self-doubt is another career suppressor. Don’t let it win. There are employers who will value the skills and abilities that you offer. Do not fall into the trap of believing that you don’t have the right skills, right experience, right number of years of experience, right industry expertise, or that the gap on your resume is too long, you’ve held too many jobs, or are too old. These are not valid reasons to stall your career if your desire is to seek growth and advancement! Believe me, there are companies and employers who will value the skills you possess, the years of experience and industry expertise you have, and who will overlook the gap, see the value in the different roles you’ve held and value the wisdom and experience you offer that a younger candidate will not. You can reach company presidents, organization leaders and influencers in your industry in a way that establishes rapport and a chance for them to get to know you. People do business with people they know, like and trust. Enter into true conversations with people on Twitter, and you can develop know, like and trust with them. To chat or not to chat If you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you’ve heard of Twitter chats. They are conversations. It is a chat session that goes on via Twitter, sending your messages out via public tweets. Where I see people struggle is in deciding to create a chat themselves.  Some delve into this quickly, after all the practice of creating your own Facebook groups and LinkedIn groups is so popular now that the natural tendency is to believe that developing a Twitter chat should be just as easy. Gary Vaynerchuk recommends “don’t do it!” He says to ride the hashtag rather than create it. As the creator and moderator of #brandchat, a weekly chat on Twitter all about every aspect of branding that’s been in existence of five years, I see the value in creating a chat yet there has to be good decision making and strategy around it. Just Tell Me All the Bad Stuff - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Many years ago I was asked to evaluate a speech for a Toastmasters event where the speaker was preparing for the regional championship. Winingat this level meant he would go onto to the international level. It was a big stepping stone.The speakerasked us to dohim a favor beforehe got started.What he said caught my attention and has stuck with me all these years. He said and I quote… “Only tell me about the bad stuff“ He gave a little post-amble after that. Where he said something tothe effect of“I don’t need to be puffed up with the good stuff. I absolutely will appreciate that afterwards, but I need to hear the bad stuff first so that I can improve.” I need to hear the bad stuff so that I can improve That’s easy to say and a lot harder to do. It also runs counter to whatMarcus Buckingham says in Now, Discover Your Strengths from 2001 (and still worth a read)â€" where the research he did with The Gallup organization showed that it was more effective to focus on your strengths. And, the implication was to hire and job things out tocompensatefor your weaknesses. So, how is “Only tell me about the bad stuff” different from “Focus on Your Strengths?” I believe this is a viable strategy on the grand scheme of things. And,in this particular situation the speaker didn’t want to focus on his strengths and he specifically wanted to know where the audience felt he had fallen flat. To be honest… it was kinda hard to do. Especially within the Toastmasters context where we are taught to encourage speakers. Tell me about my flaws It takes a strong person to ask that question and an even stronger person to listen (intently and silently) to thebrutally candid responses that may come back. Can you stand it? Will you ask the question? Do you ask the question? It is really tough to not defend yourself when somebody starts slinging arrows in your direction. Even when you ask for it… it can be tough. My recommendation is to be open and ask that question and expect and encourage brutal honesty. Some History: A mentor I worked with at Microsoft used that the terms “brutal honesty“ to seek that kind of feedback. I have to say I don’t always seek that brutally honest feedback. And that’s on me. Perhaps I should do it a little bit more. If youdo soon a regular basis drop a note in the comments and tell us how it works for you. From this mentor and with this mentor… We all asked for and expected the truth and we were ready to hear the Brutally Honest feedback. But are we really prepared for that truth when it comes right back at us? Not everyone is. Even when they say they are. So, here are a few ways to think about providing feedback… even when the person says Only tell me about the bad stuff. Tips for giving feedback: Remember it’s not about the person it’s about the presentation, the material, the content. If there is something of a more personal nature that needs to be addressed remember PIP and CIP. PIP means Praise in Public CIP means Criticize in Private As noted in the case of the Toastmasters speakerhe specificallyasked us to criticize him in public. And, we obliged. Pro Tip: Unless the person specifically asks for criticism in a public forum you should plan on giving it in private. It doesn’t necessarily work in all situations. However, as a best practice and as a way to improve in your career and grow your skills I encourage you to take that difficult step and allow someone to give you brutally candid feedback. As for me, I give you permission to tell me all the bad stuff. Go ahead! Tell me. I can take it. I hope you consider asking for it too. It just might change your life and the way to see things.

Oftentimes, we get stuck in jobs because the work we are doing demands a rigorous routine and our complete focus. Being consumed by our work means that it consumes our attention away from our career. If you are feeling like you are in a rut and uninspired, the best place to start is this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: Do one thing a day that scares you. This doesn’t mean radical things. The things that scare you are ones that push your envelope. Simply put: this means trying something new. Routines are ruts and unto themselves a repeated process that takes place over and over again. Time to break that up. It’s all about finding things that can inspire you. Help you learn new things. Apply new ideas. Be exposed to novel concepts that challenge that status quo. We are not talking skydiving here. It’s all about incremental growth but growth nonetheless. What you are really doing is taking time for yourself. This requires creating space, purpose, and opportunity. And it’s pretty easy, actually. Use your calendar to create your own timelines and work plan. Every 6 months, create a reminder to sign up for some classes to add for your skill sets. Every 3 months, plan on doing an assessment of your work environment to look for “stretch assignments.” Every week, read at least one article that changes your perception of things. Every day, evaluate your job for ways to improve it or enhance the work that you are doing. Career growth begins when you start making time for yourself. When you aren’t growing, it means that you are neglecting yourself. By taking charge of your career growth, you flourish within your work life, earnings potential, and career advancement.

Crave According to Merriam-Webster: Crave:  'krav (verb) to ask for earnestly:  beg,  demand  crave  a pardon for neglect to want greatly:  need  craves  drugs   to yearn for  crave  a vanished youth to have a strong or inward desire  craves  after affection What do you crave? Well, what if the answer was a fulfilling career? This could provide you with the money to do what you really wanted. But at what price?  What would you sacrifice to make this happen? This week, think about what it is you crave and what it will take to make it a reality. Create When was the last time you created something either an idea or an object? There is a deep satisfaction that comes from creating. And while that can be intrinsically fulfilling, try taking it one step further. Create and SHARE! Find a way to share your creation with someone who will hear it, see it, feel it, know it. We dont create enough, in my opinion. What will you create and share this week? Critique We all say we want feedback; though sometimes it hurts. When you provide feedback it shows you are paying attention and have concern for the other person. Your critique shows that you want to help them develop and improve. And by the way, critiquing also gives you the opportunity to share what you know and think. Are You Overqualified for the Job You Want Looking for a job is not always fun, and you need a good resume to help you along in the process. Here’s an important question to considerâ€"does your resume give the impression that you are overqualified for the job you want? Or, are you truly overqualified to get the job that your heart desires? Having too many qualifications for a job can be detrimental to a job seeker looking for either a different type of position, or one considered lower.   Deciding how to write your resume properly to get the job you want is a necessity. However, there is one other thing to consider when re-writing your resume, be sure to include the important things. Deleting things from your resume can be very detrimental to your job search, even if you feel it will over-qualify you. Something else to keep in mind about changing your resume around for the one single job that you want is that the company may have other openings. This is an important point to considerâ€"quite often, a resume will be passed around within a company if the job you want is not available. When you suddenly present a resume that is accurate and different from the original, your prospective employer will be put off. So, the problem that presents itself is how to write the resume, still show that you have a lot of qualificationsâ€"but scare possible employers away. You are determined to get a job that you really want, but you are overqualified for it. There may be a number of reasons for your decision to lower yourself, and this is something to consider when talking to prospective employers. Once your resume has made it into an employer’s hands, and they seem interested, some will be confused. Why would you want a job that is beneath you? Have some valid reasons to back yourself up. Tell them what made you come to this decision. You dont need to say, well, I cant get anything else, but you could say something like, Yes, I know I might be a little overqualified, but this type of position has always interested me and I think having these extra skills could really impact the position and what it could do for ABC Co. etc. Changing industries and jobs may be more difficult to do due to your being over qualified. On the other hand, your willingness to learn something new may make all the difference in the world when the prospective employer considers you for the job. It does not matter if you are overqualified for a job or notâ€"it is still possible to get it. Communicating properlyâ€"both verbally and through demonstrating an eagerness to learn and changeâ€"will make a huge impression.
